Joy, Even Now: Presence, Gratitude, and Letting the Good In
May 24, 2025
We live guarded—sometimes, okay, often. We brace for impact without even realizing it.
We keep our hearts just out of reach of the good stuff—joy, peace, connection—never letting it fully settle into our bones. Waiting, fearing, the moment it will disappear.
Instead, we dangle our happiness on a distant hook:
“I’ll be happy when…”
…when I hit the goal.
…when I get the promotion.
…when the baby comes, the weight drops, the relationship heals.
But what if that thing never happens?
What if that version of life you’ve been postponing your joy for… never arrives?
Now you’ve spent years holding your breath.
Waiting.
Chasing a future moment instead of living this one.
Think of all the minutes, days, years unlived because joy was always tied to "someday."
Or consider the moments worry stole from you—
Moments that could’ve been light, calm, carefree—
But instead were consumed by fear of what might come or regret over what’s already gone.
So how do we change that?
How do we let joy in—
Here. Now.
In the ordinary and imperfect beauty of today?
We begin to understand that time is fleeting.
Life slips by while we’re busy, distracted, assuming we have more of it.
And then—suddenly—when we thought we had a lifetime with someone… they’re gone.
When we thought we’d take the trip, chase the dream, make the call… our bodies, or circumstances, say otherwise.
We never really know when the last time will be the last time.
And just like that, the moment is gone.
So how do we seize what’s here now?
How do we find joy in the day-to-day?
Presence.
Wherever you are—be there.
Whoever you’re with—be with them.
If the sun is shining, let it warm your bones.
If the music moves you, really hear it.
If the meal comforts you, savor it.
If the conversation stirs your soul, lean all the way in.
Don’t overlook the tiny moments. They’re not so tiny.
Be present.
Notice the glimmers of goodness, and let gratitude rise in you.
When joy, peace, love, or fulfillment show up—even briefly—pause.
Take a breath.
Say a quiet thank you.
Because these moments—the laughter, the sunshine, the food, the connection, the stillness—these are the reasons.
These are the building blocks of a life well-lived.
Sometimes, because of past pain or deep beliefs, we struggle to let the good all the way in.
But here’s the miracle:
Even when we feel disconnected, the joyful moments still come.
They arrive anyway—like gentle invitations, full of hope and anticipation.
Maybe, over time, the walls we built will crumble, stone by stone.
And joy will find its way in.
Whether you call it God, the Universe, Spirit, or something else—it never stops offering us the chance to feel more.
More love.
More light.
More aliveness.
More ease.
Even when we resist it, it keeps showing up.
Hopeful.
Patient.
Waiting for the day we surrender to the goodness,
and release the fear that it won’t last.
